Gympie South State School was established in 1910, born from the community's desire to create a place of learning for their children. The original school building, built on land generously donated by Mrs. George Argo, was a modest structure measuring 8 by 5 metres, complete with front and back verandas. Painted in dark brown timber with white trims, this humble building welcomed its first student, Mr. Ernest Smith, on July 4, 1910. Mr. Donald Price, the school's first head teacher, served for 32 years, setting the foundation for what would become a cherished institution.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the closure of several smaller schools in nearby areas led to a significant increase in enrolments, with children traveling by bus to Gympie South. This growth spurred the construction of new buildings, but the original one-room schoolhouse remains a vital part of the school today, serving as the music room.
Over the years, our facilities have expanded to meet the needs of our growing student body. We now have dedicated junior and senior school classrooms, a modern amenities block, a senior courtyard, and a multipurpose hall. In 2006, we opened a new administration building, followed by a library learning centre and hall extension in 2011. A Special Education Program building was added in 2012, and in 2013, a new Prep building increased our capacity further. Our swimming pool, opened in 1981, serves both the school and the local community, hosting swim classes, competitions, and events.
Today, we are proud to educate approximately 500 students across 24 classrooms, including a robust Special Needs program. Our staff is a mix of experienced senior teachers, enthusiastic graduates, and dedicated teacher aides. We offer specialized support in literacy, numeracy, physical education, music, instrumental music, and languages, alongside a comprehensive Special Education Program. Our administration and support staff, including a full-time deputy principal, principal, and school chaplain, work collaboratively to ensure the smooth running of the school and the well-being of our students.
At Gympie South, we are dedicated to providing a positive, encouraging learning environment where each child can reach their full potential. Our school is built on the belief that education is a partnership between the school and the family. With programs like "You Can Do It" and a focus on the ‘Keys for Success,’ we empower our students to take responsibility for their learning and personal growth.
The school's motto, “Together we make the difference,” encapsulates our commitment to fostering teamwork and community spirit. We provide a wide range of opportunities for students to develop academic, physical, and creative skills, with recognized programs in physical education, music, chess, leadership, and student support.
We encourage parents to be actively involved in their child’s education and to engage with the many programs and activities we offer. Together, we ensure that every child’s experience at Gympie South is rewarding and fulfilling.
Having celebrated our centenary in 2010, Gympie South State School proudly stands as a testament to over 100 years of quality education, community support, and student success.
